WITH / AVEC

Welcome back for another lesson on apprendsetparle! :) 

Last week we saw how to use "ou" and "et" in French. Today, we will focus on the word "avec" (with). Ready? GO!

AVEC / WITH

"Avec" is a preposition. It can be used to indicate many things such as: 

- The accompaniment of someone

- Being equipped with something

- The identity of some feelings or expressing a personnal view

- Simultaneity

- As a complement of adjective and verb.

- A way (to do something)

- A cause (to something)

- Opposing someone's opinion

- Possession 

Let's see some examples below: 

The accompaniment of someone 

"Je suis allé chez le docteur avec mon mari." / "I went to the doctor with my husband."

Here, "avec" is used to show that I went somewhere with someone. 

Being equipped with something

"Julie est sorti avec un parapluie." / "Julie went out with an umbrella."

Here, "avec" is used to show that Julie took an umbrella with her, probably because it was raining. She went out with full hands.

The identity of some feelings or expressing a personnal view

"Avec cet auteur, je pense que le suspens est à son comble et ce, jusqu'à la fin du roman !" / "With this author, I think the suspense is at its highest point until the end of the novel!"

Here, "avec" is used to describe a thought, a personnal view about a project, a book, or someone else.

Simultaneity

"Paul se lève avec le jour." / "Paul is waking up with the sunrise."

Simultaneity. We describe a situation that happens at the same time of another. Paul is waking up exactly when the sun comes up and the day begins. "Avec" is used to describe this simultaneity.

As a complement of adjective and verb.

"Être gentil avec tout le monde." / "Being kind with everyone."

A way (to do something)

"Répondre avec humour." / "To reply with humor."

"Faire un trou avec un marteau." / "To make a hole with a hammer."

A cause (to something)

"Avec ce brouillard, on ne voit pas la route." / "With this fog, we can't see the road."

Opposing someone's opinion

"Avec toi, il est seulement question d'argent !" / "With you, it's only a matter of money!" 

Possession

"Une maison avec jardin." / "A house with a garden."
